How Can sinus Infection And Sore Throat Be Treated?

Last weekend I began feeling bad, symptoms included sinus congestion, sore throat. I took Robitussin DM (that didn t work) so I tried Musinex DM - but the chest congestion continued to get worse and I developed an awful, unproductive cough. After 7 days of OTC meds not helping I went to see my new PCP. She basically listed to my lungs and said they were clear and did not prescribe anything and told me to continue treating the symptoms with OTC meds. I am miserable. I am completely unable to sleep because the coughing is so bad and I have headache. I now am having coughing spells that sound like a hacking baby seal.. My voice is gone. Oh and did I mention I cant sleep ?! I called the Dr back and insisted they do something, they are apparently going to call in a steroid pack. She said she did not think it was bacterial (even though they did not do a test to confirm that ?) I don t know what to do ? I don t trust this idiot PCP, I wanted a second opinion.

Hello, Thanks for the question. Viral infections can cause rhinitis and sinusitis and cough. However, these are usually self limiting conditions. Hence only symptomatic treatment is given. But some times following viral attack, bacterial infections do come in. Which can cause prolonged cough, with sputum, sore throat. In such a situation an antibiotic that has anti- streptococcal action is definitely a better choice. But these drugs need a prescription. You may look at approaching another doctor who may prescribe the same. Thanks
